What Happens After You Apply for CPP Disability?

Introduction

After you submit a CPP Disability application, the waiting can be stressful. Applicants often wonder whether Service Canada received everything, whether a doctor will be contacted, and what happens if the answer is no.

Here is what Canadians should know after applying.

The decision timeline

Service Canada says it aims to make a decision within 120 calendar days, unless the application qualifies for priority processing. It may take longer if required documents are missing, if more medical information is needed, or if Service Canada asks for another medical evaluation.

If you apply online, you should receive a confirmation message. If you apply by paper, you should receive a letter confirming that the application was received.

Follow-up requests

Service Canada may contact you or your medical professional for more information. Respond quickly and keep copies of anything you send. If your doctor needs more time, communicate early instead of missing a deadline without explanation.

You can check status through My Service Canada Account or by phone if it has been more than 120 days since you applied.

If the application is approved

Your approval letter should include your first payment date and monthly amount. CPP Disability benefits are paid monthly. If you qualify, the benefit starts 4 months after the date your disability was found to be severe and prolonged. You may receive up to 11 months of retroactive payments from the date Service Canada received your application.

This is one reason applicants should not wait unnecessarily once a disability becomes severe and prolonged. Timing can affect payment.

If the application is denied

A denial letter should explain the reasons and provide steps to request reconsideration. Read it carefully. The reason may relate to CPP contributions, the severe and prolonged test, insufficient medical evidence, or uncertainty about work capacity.

A denial is not the end of the road. You usually have 90 days from receiving the decision letter to request reconsideration. Use that time to identify the weakness in the file and gather better evidence.
