Money questions are often urgent for CPP Disability applicants. How much could I receive? When would payments start? Will tax be taken off? What happens when I turn 65?
The exact amount depends on your CPP contribution history, but several 2026 figures can help you understand the structure.
The monthly CPP Disability payment has two parts: a basic monthly amount and an additional amount based on how much you contributed to CPP during your working years. For 2026, the basic monthly amount is $610.46. The maximum monthly CPP Disability benefit for 2026 is $1,741.20. The average monthly amount for new beneficiaries listed by Canada.ca is $1,210.86.
The maximum and average amounts are not guaranteed. Someone with a different contribution history may receive a different amount.
CPP Disability is income support. It does not pay directly for medications, medical devices, or health costs. Those supports may come from provincial or territorial programs, private insurance, employer plans, or other programs. If you receive disability income from other sources, you may still qualify for CPP Disability, but those other programs may adjust their payments after CPP approval.
CPP Disability is taxable. Taxes are not automatically deducted unless you request monthly deductions, so some recipients may owe tax when they file their income tax return. Direct deposit can help avoid mail delays and can be set up for a bank account in Canada, the United States, or other participating countries.
If approved, CPP Disability starts 4 months after the disability was found to be severe and prolonged. Retroactive payments may go back up to 11 months from the date the application was received.
At age 65, CPP Disability automatically changes to a CPP retirement pension. The retirement pension may be lower than the disability benefit. If you receive the post-retirement disability benefit, that payment stops at 65 and you continue receiving the retirement pension.
Because payment rules can affect household budgeting, it is wise to plan ahead before age 65 and ask questions early.
